Outdoor Enthusiast – Dan

Former postman Dan Northwick believes Live the Adventure’s Outdoor Instructor Training Academy delivers a first-class route for potential thrill-seekers.

The 29-year-old grew up wanting a job where he could work outside. However, delivering letters in all weather conditions wasn’t quite what he had in mind – prompting him to take a career break in 2015. And his decision to undergo the eight-week fast track outdoor instructor training course changed his life.

Dan has since swapped the post bag for the Horseshoe Lake Activity in Sandhurst. He initially joined there as a multi activity instructor, before becoming manager a year ago. He has no regrets. “I got to 26-years-old and I fancied something new,” he said. “I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to be outside – that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do really. Working as a postman offered me that but it was such a boring job. I wanted more. I then went to the Outdoor and Adventure Show at the London ExCeL spotted Live The Adventure promoting their fast track outdoor instructor training courses and it changed my life. At that point I knew I had to make the change.”

Dan, based in Bracknell, is enjoying life in his new role. But it would not have been possible with Ant Eddies-Davies and his committed team of mentors. Throughout my adult life I’ve had a yearning for being in the outdoors,” he added.

“Live The Adventure have allowed me to fulfil that. I was actually one of the oldest people on my course – and I was only 26-years-old – so it goes to show just how popular these courses are with younger people. The instructor academies are absolutely brilliant and underline why they are so popular. It’s thanks to this that my career break ended up becoming a career change.”
